A dark cap set above a bold white supercilium gives the Black-capped Hemispingus (Kleinothraupis atropileus) a masked look that carries well in the gloom of Andean cloud forest. The species belongs to the tanager family, Thraupidae, and occupies humid montane forest undergrowth and shrubby margins above about 2,000 m, from Colombia and Venezuela south through Ecuador into Peru. It takes insects, berries and seeds, and frequently travels with mixed-species flocks. Clutches hold two eggs. Recorded birds average about 22 g with a wingspan near 15 cm. The IUCN Red List rates the species Least Concern.
