소개

The Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) is a small heron of the family Ardeidae and the smallest heron breeding in Europe. Adult males are striking birds: the crown, back, and tail are glossy black, sharply contrasting with large, pale buff to cream-colored wing patches on both the upper and lower wing surfaces — features immediately conspicuous in flight. The neck, breast, and belly are pale buff with a darker central stripe, and the facial skin around the eye is yellow. Females are more heavily streaked brown on the upperparts. Total length is 27–36 cm and weight 59–150 grams, making it one of the smallest members of the family.

The Little Bittern breeds across a vast range spanning southern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, extending east through South Asia to Australia. European populations are strongly migratory, wintering in tropical Africa. The species inhabits freshwater and brackish wetlands with dense emergent vegetation, particularly reedbeds, cattail stands, and shrubby waterside growth. It requires shallow water and dense cover and is rarely found in wetlands lacking substantial vegetated margins.

Like all small Ixobrychus bitterns, the Little Bittern climbs through vertical reed stems with great agility using its elongate toes, allowing it to forage and nest in the interior of reedbeds. It feeds on small fish, aquatic insects, frogs, tadpoles, and earthworms, typically captured by perching over water and striking downward at prey. Foraging is crepuscular and nocturnal, though activity increases during dawn and dusk.

Breeding occurs from May to July in Europe. The nest is a small, compact platform of plant stems woven into a clump of reeds or low shrubs a few centimeters above water. The clutch contains five to seven white eggs, incubated by both sexes for 16–19 days. Chicks are semi-altricial and fledge in approximately three weeks. Males produce a repetitive barking or croaking call from concealment in reedbeds during the breeding season.

The Little Bittern is listed as Least Concern globally but has declined in parts of Europe due to drainage of wetlands, loss of reedbeds, and water pollution. It is a protected species across much of its European range.
