38–40 cm, 날개 길이 81–91 cm. 두 개의 흰 날개 반점이 있는 체크 무늬 흑백 깃털로 오인할 수 없다. 남빙양에서 풍부; 남극·아남극 절벽 선반에서 번식. 선박을 열심히 따라다니며 크릴·물고기·음식 찌꺼기를 먹는다. 가장 흔히 볼 수 있는 남극 바닷새 중 하나.
