15–18 cm(날개 길이 38 cm)의 대형 칼새로 전체 어두운 깃털과 약간 갈라진 꼬리를 가진다. 서부 북아메리카와 카리브 해의 해안 절벽과 폭포 뒤에서 번식한다. 산과 계곡 위 높은 곳에서 채이며 먹이를 구하는 공중 곤충식성. 남아메리카에서 월동하는 장거리 이동철새.
