검은부리후추새는 콜롬비아·에콰도르 안데스 산기슭의 통통하고 머리가 큰 비레오류 조류로 비슷한 후추새들과 달리 부리가 전체적으로 어둡다. 습윤한 산지림 수관부와 가장자리, 인접한 키 큰 이차림에 서식한다. 튼튼한 갈고리 부리로 잎사귀에서 대형 곤충과 애벌레를 꼼꼼히 잡아먹는다.
