사하라 이남 아프리카 바위 노출부와 돌이 많은 언덕에 사는 중형 쏙독새(25-28 cm). 이끼 덮인 암석처럼 보이는 독특하게 점박이 회갈색 깃털을 가진다. 야행성 곤충 포식자다. 거주성이며, 쏙독새 중 가장 뛰어난 보호색을 가진 종 중 하나다.
