아프리카 동부와 아라비아 반도 남부의 건조한 반사막과 아리드 덤불에 사는 소형 쏙독새(21-23 cm). 모래 빛 갈색 몸통에 날개 덮깃에 별 모양의 흰 반점이 있다. 야행성 곤충 포식자다. 원격지 서식지로 연구가 부족하다.

Dark brown upperparts densely dotted with small buff-white stellate spots; white throat patch; underparts barred buff and dark brown; the star-like white spotting on wing coverts and back is the key distinguishing feature.

Found from India and Sri Lanka east to southern China, Indochina, and the Philippines. Resident in open country, rice paddies, and light scrub.

Crepuscular insect hawker; primarily moths and beetles caught during aerial sallies over forest edges.
