사하라 이남 아프리카 습한 초지, 늪, 볼리스(vleis)에 사는 중형 쏙독새(23-24 cm). 따뜻한 갈색 몸통에 독특한 흰 목 반점이 있다. 야행성으로 키 큰 풀에서 쉬며 곤충을 먹는다. 거주성이며 건기에는 부분적으로 이동한다.
