定義
The sequence and timing of feather replacement, which varies by species and can aid identification.
詳細な説明
Molt terminology distinguishes complete molts (all feathers replaced) from partial molts (specific tracts replaced). The Humphrey-Parkes system uses neutral terminology (basic, alternate plumage) while the Staffelmauser concept describes staggered wave-molt in large-winged species. Molt timing is largely photoperiodically controlled but constrained by breeding season and migration — birds rarely molt, breed, and migrate simultaneously. Retained juvenile remiges, visible as pale, worn wing panel contrasting with fresh adult feathers, are a key aging criterion.
