Sulawesi Woodcock

Sulawesi Woodcock: 32–36 cm, woodcock endemic to montane forest of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Nocturnal with cryptic brown plumage. Inhabits mossy forest above 1,000 m; probes leaf litter and soft soil for invertebrates. NT. Threatened by logging and agricultural conversion of highland forest. Sedentary island endemic.

Amami Woodcock

Amami Woodcock: 34–36 cm, large rufous woodcock endemic to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan (Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima). Inhabits dense subtropical forest. Nocturnal; probes soil for earthworms. NT. Threatened by feral mongooses introduced for snake control and habitat loss. Sedentary island endemic. Similar to Eurasian Woodcock.
