Henderson Petrel
36–38 cm. All-dark gadfly petrel; sooty-brown with slightly paler primary patch below. Breeds Henderson Island (Pitcairn Islands). Endangered; population estimated at 5,000–10,000 pairs but vulnerable to introduced rats. Ranges in South Pacific; feeds at night on squid.
Balearic Shearwater
30–38 cm. Brown above; variably dirty-white to brown below; often shows brown smudging on flanks. Breeds only Balearic Islands, Spain. Critically Endangered with fewer than 3,000 pairs; faces extinction. Migrates to NE Atlantic; threatened by predators, fishing bycatch, and tourist development.
