Hoary-headed Grebe (Poliocephalus poliocephalus) is a small 27–30 cm grebe endemic to Australia and southern New Guinea. Distinctive pale grey and white head with fine dark streaking giving 'hoary' appearance; chestnut neck sides. Inhabits open freshwater lakes and reservoirs. Highly nomadic, following rain across the arid interior.

Alaotra Grebe (Tachybaptus rufolavatus) is an extinct small grebe formerly endemic to Lake Alaotra, Madagascar. Pale buff-brown, weak-winged, likely flightless or near-flightless. Last confirmed record 1985; declared extinct in 2010.
