About These Birds

Grey Plover

Grey Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) is a medium 27–31 cm shorebird with a near-global wintering distribution. Non-breeding: pale grey-brown above, whitish below; black armpits distinctive in flight. Breeding: black underparts with white flanks. Breeds on Arctic tundra; winters on mudflats and sandy beaches worldwide. Wingspan to 77 cm.

Spot-breasted Lapwing: 28–30 cm, Ethiopian highland endemic lapwing with a black head and breast spotted white, and red legs. Restricted to high-altitude moorland and montane grassland above 1,800 m in Ethiopia. Insectivorous. Sedentary; rare and little-studied. Declining due to overgrazing and agricultural encroachment.
