北ヨーロッパ・アジアの森林湖で繁殖し、沿岸で越冬する大型の潜水ガモ（体長51〜58cm）。雄は光沢のある黒い体に白い翼斑と眼下の白点が特徴。Melanitta fusca（ビロードスズガモ）は主に二枚貝を食べ、荒波の沿岸でも潜水採食できる。日本の日本海側沿岸でも越冬が観察される。Anatidae科。
