北米西部からコロンビアにかけての樫の木林に生息するドングリキツツキ。体長20〜23cm。赤い頭頂部と黒白のピエロ顔が特徴的。ドングリを木の幹の穴に大量に貯蔵する習性で有名。協力繁殖種。低危険種。
Black-backed Woodpecker
カナダの焼けた北方林（ボレアル林）に生息する中型のキツツキ（体長21〜24cm）。黒い体に雄の黄色い頭頂部と白い腹の縦縞が特徴。Picoides arcticus（クロキツツキ）は山火事後の焼けた木に生息するキクイムシ類を好み、山火事林の重要な「クリーナー」として機能する。Picidae科。
