About These Birds

Auckland Islands Shag

63 cm. Black and white; orange caruncles. Endemic to Auckland Islands, New Zealand subantarctic. Vulnerable; total population estimated at only a few thousand. Feeds on fish and invertebrates in surrounding cold ocean waters. Non-migratory; restricted to the island group.

Spectacled Cormorant

Extinct; last recorded in 1850 on Bering Island. Very large; dark green-black with white spectacle marks. Flightless or near-flightless. Endemic to Bering Sea islands; exterminated within decades of discovery by Russian fur traders hunting for food. One of the few recently extinct cormorants.
