北米・中南米の湿地、沿岸に生息する小型のシラサギ（体長52〜65cm）。純白の羽毛と黒い嘴・脚に黄色い足が特徴。Egretta thula（ユキコサギ）は浅い水域で素早い動きで魚を捕まえる。19世紀末に飾り羽目的で乱獲され激減したが、保護活動により回復した。現在も世界各地の湿地で普通に見られる。Ardeidae科。

The Réunion Night-Heron (Nycticorax duboisi) is an extinct species of night-heron belonging to the family Ardeidae, formerly endemic to the island of Réunion in the southwestern Indian Ocean. The species is known only from a brief historical description by the early European traveler Dubois, who visited Réunion in 1671–1672 and described a large, gray-colored bird with a white belly that was hunted and eaten by settlers.
