メキシコから南アメリカにかけての熱帯の河川・湿地に生息する夜行性のサギ（体長46〜52cm）。特大の扁平な嘴と大きな赤い目が特徴的で、「ボートビルドヘロン」とも呼ばれる。Cochlearius cochlearius（ハシビロサギ）は夜間に扁平な嘴で水面をすくうように魚を捕まえる独特の採食方法を持つ。Ardeidae科。

The Réunion Night-Heron (Nycticorax duboisi) is an extinct species of night-heron belonging to the family Ardeidae, formerly endemic to the island of Réunion in the southwestern Indian Ocean. The species is known only from a brief historical description by the early European traveler Dubois, who visited Réunion in 1671–1672 and described a large, gray-colored bird with a white belly that was hunted and eaten by settlers.
