メキシコから南アメリカにかけての熱帯の河川・湿地に生息する夜行性のサギ（体長46〜52cm）。特大の扁平な嘴と大きな赤い目が特徴的で、「ボートビルドヘロン」とも呼ばれる。Cochlearius cochlearius（ハシビロサギ）は夜間に扁平な嘴で水面をすくうように魚を捕まえる独特の採食方法を持つ。Ardeidae科。
