ヨーロッパ・中央アジアで繁殖し、アフリカで越冬するコウノトリ（体長100〜115cm）。白い体に黒い翼端、赤い嘴と脚が特徴的。Ciconia ciconia（シュバシコウ）はヨーロッパの農村で屋根や煙突の上に大きな巣を作り、ヨーロッパ文化で「赤ちゃんを運ぶ鳥」として親しまれてきた。Ciconiidae科。
