Freshwater marshes, wet savannas, lake edges, and seasonally flooded grasslands in northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela. Associated with low-lying wetlands near large rivers and estuaries.
Southern Screamer
Freshwater marshes, seasonally flooded grasslands, lake margins, and wet pampas from Bolivia and Brazil south through Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. Tolerates cattle pastures and modified wetlands.
Song & Call Comparison
Northern Screamer
Loud, far-carrying screaming calls given in chorus by flocks. Call is a ringing 'cchaaaaa'. Less commonly heard than Horned Screamer but still highly vocal in wetland habitat.
Southern Screamer
An extremely loud, resonant screaming duet 'chakka-chakka'. Pairs coordinate their calls. Flocks on wetlands create a powerful cacophony audible over great distances.
