ハジロウミスズメ、30〜32 cm。北大西洋の小型ウミスズメ類；夏羽は全身黒色に太い白い翼斑と鮮やかな赤い足。北極〜亜寒帯の岩礁海岸に通年生息；繁殖地付近の沿岸海域で越冬。潜水して魚介類を捕食。

Nests in rock crevices; chicks led to sea while still tiny. Piscivore; threatened by gill-net bycatch and feral predators on islands.
