カナダの焼けた北方林（ボレアル林）に生息する中型のキツツキ（体長21〜24cm）。黒い体に雄の黄色い頭頂部と白い腹の縦縞が特徴。Picoides arcticus（クロキツツキ）は山火事後の焼けた木に生息するキクイムシ類を好み、山火事林の重要な「クリーナー」として機能する。Picidae科。
