南米（ブラジル、ボリビア、アルゼンチン北部）の熱帯林縁、庭園、二次林に生息する小型のハチドリ（体長6〜8cm）。雄のアメジスト色に輝く喉が最大の特徴。Calliphlox amethystina（アメジストウッドスター）は南米最小のハチドリの一つで、体重は1g程度しかない。Trochilidae科。
