北極圏で繁殖し、世界中の海岸で越冬するシギ（体長16〜22cm）。夏羽は赤褐色の背と黒い腹、冬羽は灰色。Calidris alpina（ハマシギ）は長嘴を使って泥の中の虫や甲殻類を探す。日本の干潟でも重要な越冬地があり、渡りの時期には大群が干潟を覆う壮観な光景が見られる。Scolopacidae科。
