Brown upperparts with chestnut streaks; grey face and supercilium; chestnut-spotted buff flanks; white belly; grey breast; rufous-chestnut tail. Female similar but slightly smaller; lacks tarsal spur of male.

Rich ferruginous (deep rusty-orange) overall; upperparts black-and-rufous barred; flanks black boldly spotted white; bare red facial skin; underparts rufous-orange; one of the most vividly coloured Southeast Asian partridges.

中国東部・中部に広く分布する竹薮・低木地・林縁に生息するキジ科の小型で騒がしいシャコ（約270g）。密な植生の中に溶け込む褐色と灰色の羽毛を持つ。「kick-your-bottom」（お尻を蹴れ）を繰り返す鳴き声で有名。雑食性；種子と無脊椎動物を食べる。軽度懸念。
