ハクトウワシはアメリカ合衆国の国鳥で国の象徴である。DDT農薬使用により一度は絶滅の危機に瀕したが、見事な回復を遂げ、2007年に絶滅危惧種リストから外された。これらの力強い猛禽類は、2トンを超えるものもある鳥類最大の木の巣を作る。

バミューダタカはバミューダ固有の大型タカで、17世紀初頭の人間入植後まもなく絶滅した。亜化石の骨のみから知られており、海鳥や他の島嶼動物を捕食する広翼のワシタカ類だったと思われる。生息地破壊と狩猟が絶滅の一因となった。
