クマタカモドキはヒマラヤ山麓からミャンマー・中国南部・マレー半島にかけての熱帯・亜熱帯林に生息する、大きな冠羽・黒い上面・栗色の縞がある白い下面を持つ小型の際立ったワシタカ目の鳥。林縁や二次林を含む熱帯・亜熱帯林に生息し、主に大型昆虫・カエル・トカゲを小群で狩ることもある。

ハクトウワシはアメリカ合衆国の国鳥で国の象徴である。DDT農薬使用により一度は絶滅の危機に瀕したが、見事な回復を遂げ、2007年に絶滅危惧種リストから外された。これらの力強い猛禽類は、2トンを超えるものもある鳥類最大の木の巣を作る。
