全長41〜43cm、翼開長95〜100cm。煤けた茶褐色で、翼下面に銀色の閃光模様を持つ。オーストラリアのバス海峡の島々に膨大な数で繁殖し、世界有数の個体数を誇る海鳥のひとつ。北太平洋へ大群で渡る。オキアミや魚を食べる。タスマニアでは「マトンバード」として持続可能な収穫が行われる。

43 cm, wingspan 104 cm. Large; dark brown above with pale belly and dusky breast-band creating hooded appearance. Breeds Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island; ranges into south Atlantic and Indian Ocean. Endangered; threatened by introduced predators and longline fisheries.
