About These Birds
Great Shearwater
全長43〜51cm、翼開長105〜122cm。大型；上面は暗褐色、下面は白く、暗色の帽子と特徴的な翼上面の鱗状模様を持つ。トリスタン・ダ・クーニャ、ゴフ、フォークランド諸島で繁殖し、北大西洋へ渡る。魚や烏賊を食べる；繁殖後の渡りでは英国沿岸を大群が通過する光景が見事。
Northern Giant Petrel
80–95 cm, wingspan 150–200 cm. Resembles Southern Giant Petrel but bill tip is reddish-brown; lacks white morph. Breeds subantarctic islands (South Georgia, Macquarie, Auckland). Ranges north into subtropics; scavenges offal and carrion at sea. Near Threatened due to longline bycatch.
