全世界の温帯・熱帯湿地に広く分布する大型のシラサギ（体長80〜104cm）。純白の羽毛と黄色い嘴が特徴。繁殖期には美しい装飾羽（レース状の飾り羽）が生える。Ardea alba（ダイサギ）は19世紀末に飾り羽目的の乱獲で激減したが、鳥類保護運動の象徴となって回復した。現在も世界最多の個体数を誇るサギの一つ。Ardeidae科。

The Réunion Night-Heron (Nycticorax duboisi) is an extinct species of night-heron belonging to the family Ardeidae, formerly endemic to the island of Réunion in the southwestern Indian Ocean. The species is known only from a brief historical description by the early European traveler Dubois, who visited Réunion in 1671–1672 and described a large, gray-colored bird with a white belly that was hunted and eaten by settlers.
