キョクアジサシはあらゆる動物の中で最長の渡りを行い、毎年北極と南極を往復する約7万kmの旅をする。30年の寿命の中に、月への往復3回分に相当する飛翔距離を積み重ねる可能性がある。地球上でどの生物よりも多くの昼光を経験するこの驚異的な鳥は、太陽を追い続ける。

シロアジサシは体長28〜33 cm、翼幅76〜87 cm、霊妙な白色の海鳥で青灰色のくちばし・青みがかった眼輪・大きな暗色の瞳を持つ。大西洋の熱帯の島（アセンション島・セントヘレナ島など）に繁殖し、近縁種はインド・太平洋に広く分布。巣材なしで裸の枝に産卵。水面近くで小魚を捕食。
