About These Birds

北米南部から南米にかけての熱帯・亜熱帯の水辺に生息する大型の水鳥（体長80〜95cm）。長い首と嘴で魚を突いて捕まえ、羽を広げて乾かす姿が独特。Anhinga anhinga（アメリカヘビウ）は防水機能の低い羽毛を持ち、潜水後に必ず羽を乾かす必要がある。翼を広げて佇む姿が観察者に人気。Anhingidae科。

80–97 cm. Glossy black; chestnut neck with white lower neck stripe; white wing spots. Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa and Iraq in freshwater lakes, rivers, and swamps. Spears fish by ambush; holds wings open to dry. Breeds in mixed heronries near water.
