北半球全域で繁殖する最小のカモの一つ(体長34〜38cm)。雄は栗色の頭部に緑の斑が美しく、雌は茶褐色のまだら模様。Anas crecca(コガモ)は浅い湿地や水田を好み、日本では冬季に全国の水辺で普通に見られる渡り鳥。素早い飛翔と急旋回が特徴で、狩猟対象としても知られる。Anatidae科。
