ヨーロッパ南部から中央アジアにかけて分布する大型のハゲワシ（翼開長250〜295cm、体重7〜12kg）。黒褐色の羽毛と頭部の白い産毛が特徴。動物の死骸を食べる重要な「自然の清掃員」。Aegypius monachus（クロハゲワシ）は旧世界最大のワシの一つで、IUCN準絶滅危惧種に指定されている。Accipitridae科。

ハクトウワシはアメリカ合衆国の国鳥で国の象徴である。DDT農薬使用により一度は絶滅の危機に瀕したが、見事な回復を遂げ、2007年に絶滅危惧種リストから外された。これらの力強い猛禽類は、2トンを超えるものもある鳥類最大の木の巣を作る。
