北米全域に分布する中型のタカ（体長37〜47cm）。主に森林環境を好み、小型から中型の鳥類を巧みに捕食する。青灰色の上面とオレンジ色の横縞のある下面が特徴的。Accipiter cooperii（クーパーハイタカ）は都市部の公園や郊外でも繁殖が確認されており、北米で最もよく見られる森林性猛禽類の一つ。Accipitridae科。

It soars for hours over vast distances, feeding primarily on carrion and occasionally taking live prey.
