北大西洋・北太平洋の断崖で繁殖する海鳥（体長38〜46cm）。黒い上面と白い下面が特徴で、精工な巣を作らず岩の棚に直接卵を産む。Uria aalge（ウミガラス）は海中を翼で「飛ぶ」ように泳ぐ潜水能力に優れ、魚を主食とする。卵は洋梨形で転がりにくく、狭い岩棚から落ちにくいように進化している。Alcidae科。
