ヨーロッパ・アジアの湿地・草地で繁殖するシギ（体長27〜29cm）。赤い橙色の嘴基部と脚が特徴で、飛翔時の白い翼後縁が識別点。Tringa totanus（アカアシシギ）は様々なシギの群れへの警戒係として機能し、危険を感じるとけたたましく鳴くことから「湿地の番人」の異名がある。日本でも渡りの時期に干潟で見られる。Scolopacidae科。
