について

The Rufescent Tiger-Heron (Tigrisoma lineatum) is a large, secretive heron of the family Ardeidae found widely in South America and parts of Central America. Adults display a striking combination of rufous-chestnut on the head, neck, and breast, sharply contrasting with the finely barred black and white upperparts — a pattern reminiscent of a tiger's stripes, hence the common name for the genus. The throat has a distinct white median stripe. Immatures are heavily barred overall with brown and buff, providing outstanding camouflage in the dappled light of forest streams. Adults measure 66–76 cm in length.

This species inhabits forested and semi-forested riverbanks, stream margins, flooded forest, mangrove swamps, and the edges of lakes and ponds within or adjacent to forest. Its range extends from Honduras and Nicaragua through Panama and across the entirety of tropical South America east of the Andes, south to northern Argentina and Uruguay. It is most abundant in humid lowland and foothill forest zones but ascends to moderate elevations in suitable forested terrain.

The Rufescent Tiger-Heron is predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal, foraging most actively at dusk and dawn, though it may also hunt during overcast days. It is typically solitary and sedentary, maintaining territories along stream or river systems. Prey consists mainly of fish, frogs, aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and occasionally small lizards and snakes. The bird hunts by standing motionless at the water's edge and waiting for prey to approach within striking distance, then capturing it with a rapid forward lunge of the bill and neck.

Nesting takes place in trees, typically close to water. The nest is a platform of sticks, usually concealed in dense vegetation. The clutch contains one to two pale blue-green eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs and provision the chicks. The species is non-colonial and generally solitary in its breeding habits, in contrast to the large mixed heronries formed by many other heron species.

The Rufescent Tiger-Heron is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, being a widespread and locally common species across much of its vast range. Its dependence on intact forest along waterways makes it sensitive to riparian deforestation, though it tolerates some degree of habitat disturbance.
