について
The Yellow-billed Spoonbill (Platalea flavipes) is a large wading bird endemic to Australia and belonging to the family Threskiornithidae. It is most readily distinguished from the co-occurring Royal Spoonbill by its pale yellow bill, facial skin, and legs — all yellowish rather than black — giving it a distinctive pale overall appearance. Adults are entirely white in body plumage and measure 76–92 cm in length with a wingspan of approximately 120–125 cm. During the breeding season, birds develop filamentous plumes along the breast and sides of the neck, and a small crest, though these ornamental features are less dramatic than those of some other spoonbill species. The spatulate tip of the bill is the hallmark of all spoonbills.
This species inhabits freshwater and brackish wetlands throughout Australia, with a preference for shallow, still, or slow-moving waters that allow the characteristic sideways bill-sweeping foraging technique to be most effective. Preferred habitats include flooded grasslands, swamps, lagoons, sewage treatment ponds, river margins, and irrigated agricultural areas. The species is broadly distributed across Australia except in the most arid interior and the dense tropical rainforest zones. It is nomadic, following rainfall and flooding patterns, and sometimes occurs in flocks of considerable size when temporary wetlands form.
The Yellow-billed Spoonbill forages by wading in shallow water and sweeping its open bill from side to side, using mechanoreceptors in the bill tip to detect and capture small fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates by touch. This tactile foraging method allows effective feeding in turbid water where visual detection of prey would be difficult. The species may also use sight to take prey from the water's surface.
Breeding occurs colonially, often in mixed heronries alongside Royal Spoonbills, herons, ibises, and cormorants. Nests are platforms of sticks built in trees or tall shrubs near water. The clutch typically contains two to four dull white eggs spotted with brown, and both parents share incubation over approximately 21–23 days. Chicks are fed by both parents and fledge after about six weeks. The Yellow-billed Spoonbill is listed as Least Concern and remains common and widespread across suitable habitats in Australia.
