南極で繁殖し、北半球まで渡る小型の海鳥(体長15〜19cm)。黒い体に白い腰帯が特徴で、世界最小の海鳥の一つ。Oceanites oceanicus(ウィルソンのアマツバメ)は波の上をほとんど水面スレスレに飛びながらプランクトンを食べる。「ウォーキング・ウォーター」と呼ばれる特徴的な採食行動を見せる。Oceanitidae科。
