ヨーロッパ・アジアで繁殖しアフリカで越冬するキツツキの仲間（体長16〜18cm）。褐色の樹皮模様のような迷彩羽とS字にねじれる首が特徴。Jynx torquilla（アリスイ）は捕まえられると首を奇妙な動きでねじる防御行動をすることから名付けられた。アリを舌でなめ捕る特殊な採食方法を持つ。Picidae科。
