について
The Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is one of the most brilliantly colored birds in the Americas, celebrated for its intense scarlet plumage that covers virtually the entire body. It belongs to the family Threskiornithidae and is closely related to the American White Ibis, with which it hybridizes freely in areas of range overlap in Trinidad and Venezuela. Adults measure approximately 55–63 cm in length and weigh 650–900 grams. The long, strongly decurved reddish bill, black wingtips, and bright red legs complete the vivid color scheme that makes this species unmistakable.
The Scarlet Ibis inhabits tropical and subtropical coastal wetlands, mangrove forests, mudflats, estuaries, tidal flats, and shallow lagoons. Its range is centered on the northern and eastern coastlines of South America, from Venezuela and Trinidad through Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and into northeastern Brazil. Populations also occur on several Caribbean islands. The species has been introduced or self-established in parts of North America where it hybridizes with Eudocimus albus.
The brilliant red coloration derives entirely from carotenoid pigments obtained through the diet. The primary food source consists of red fiddler crabs (Uca species) and other small crustaceans that are rich in astaxanthin and other carotenoids. When birds are deprived of these dietary pigments in captivity, their plumage fades toward white or pale pink over successive molts. The long bill is used to probe soft mud and shallow water by touch, detecting prey without sight.
The Scarlet Ibis is a highly gregarious species, forming large breeding colonies that sometimes contain tens of thousands of individuals. Nesting occurs in mangroves and other dense vegetation, often alongside herons and other ibises. The clutch typically contains two to four eggs, which are incubated by both parents for approximately 21–23 days. Chicks hatch with brown and white downy plumage and develop the characteristic red coloration gradually as they mature through juvenile and subadult stages, reaching full adult plumage at around two years of age.
The species holds great cultural significance in Trinidad and Tobago, where it is the national bird. Large communal roosts at sites such as the Caroni Swamp are major wildlife tourism attractions. The Scarlet Ibis is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though local threats include hunting, habitat degradation, and disturbance to breeding colonies.
