ヨーロッパからアジアにかけての成熟した森林に分布するキツツキ(体長40〜46cm)。全身黒で雄の赤い頭頂部が特徴的。Dryocopus martius(クマゲラ)はヨーロッパ最大のキツツキで、大きな木に穴を掘って営巣する。その巣穴は後にフクロウやムクドリなど他の穴巣性鳥類に利用される。Picidae科。
