ヨーロッパ・アジアで繁殖しアフリカで越冬するツバメ(体長13〜15cm)。青黒い上面と白い腰・下面が特徴で、四角く短い尾が識別点。Delichon urbicum(イワツバメ)は泥で造った巣を崖や建物の外壁に付け、コロニーで繁殖する。日本のツバメより高空を飛び昆虫を捕食する。Hirundinidae科。
