South Island Snipe: 20–23 cm, extinct New Zealand snipe eliminated from the South Island and surrounding islands by introduced predators. Known from subfossil remains and early museum specimens. Nocturnal invertebrate feeder of dense undergrowth. EX. Related species survive on predator-free offshore islands.
