世界中の沿岸、塩性湿地、砂浜に分布するチドリ（体長15〜18cm）。黒・白・赤褐色のパターンで、胸の黒い帯が不完全なのが特徴。Charadrius alexandrinus（シロチドリ）は砂浜や塩性湿地に直接地面に巣を作り、擬傷行動で巣を守る。日本でも海岸の営巣地が失われ、個体数が減少している。Charadriidae科。
