北米東部で繁殖し、南米北部で越冬する小型の鳥（体長12〜15cm）。細長い体と鎌型の翼が特徴で、食事・交尾・巣材集め以外はほぼ常に空中を飛び続ける。Chaetura pelagica（アマツバメ）は都市の煙突や中空の木を集団で営巣場所として利用する。「空飛ぶ葉巻」の愛称がある。Apodidae科。
