アフリカとアジアに広く分布するカワセミ（体長25〜29cm）。白・黒の斑模様が特徴的で、雄は胸に2本の黒い帯がある。Ceryle rudis（ショウビン）は水面の上空でホバリングして魚を探し、急降下して捕まえる。アフリカで最も普通に見られるカワセミで、ナイル川からナミビアまで幅広く生息する。Alcedinidae科。
