北極圏のカナダ・ロシア・グリーンランドで繁殖し、世界中の海岸で越冬するシギ(体長23〜26cm)。夏羽は赤褐色の胸と体が鮮やか。Calidris canutus(コオバシギ)は世界最長の渡りをする鳥の一つで、年間30,000kmを超す渡りを行うものもある。渡りの中継地での保全が国際的課題。Scolopacidae科。
